Growing up in Bend, Oregon, I was surrounded by nature's breathtaking beauty. This environment fostered a deep connection to the outdoors and a strong sense of responsibility toward preserving it. My early years were filled with outdoor activities like long-distance running and skiing, which instilled in me a profound appreciation for the natural world and the intricate ecosystems within it.
My journey into environmental activism began in middle school, but it truly blossomed during high school. As a freshman at Bend Senior High School, I joined the Environmental Club, where I was introduced to the alarming realities of the climate crisis and its intertwined social justice issues. The more I learned, the more I felt compelled to act. It baffled me that despite the overwhelming evidence of environmental degradation, many people remained passive. I realized that my mission was to educate, inspire, and mobilize others to protect our planet.
Throughout high school, I immersed myself in activities that aligned with my environmental ethos. I led an anti-idling campaign that successfully prevented approximately 6,000 pounds of CO2 emissions, and I served as the President of the National Honor Society and Vice President of the Interact Club. These roles taught me the importance of detailed planning, teamwork, and perseverance. Conducting waste audits, organizing clean-up projects, and engaging the community were not just extracurricular activities; they were stepping stones to a larger purpose.
My dedication extended beyond school. With over 200 hours of community service with an emphasis on environmental initiatives, I experienced firsthand the impact of collective action. Each project, whether small or large, reaffirmed my belief that we have the power to drive change. This sense of empowerment was a catalyst for my decision to pursue studies in Sustainability, Health, and the Environment at New York University (NYU), with a focus on economics and a minor in Spanish.
Transitioning to NYU was a cultural shift. The urban environment of New York City contrasted sharply with the natural serenity of Bend. Yet, it also presented new opportunities to advocate for environmental sustainability. Surrounded by brilliant minds from diverse backgrounds, I found myself in an environment where innovative projects were the norm. Here, my role evolved into bringing an environmental consciousness to various initiatives, ensuring sustainability was at the core of our work.
One of the most significant influences on my journey have been my involvement with Earthwin. This organization embodies the values I hold dear: sustainability, community, and a deep respect for nature. As a board member and intern, I’ve had the privilege of contributing to projects that make a tangible difference. Our So' Alegria marketplace is a testament to this commitment, offering eco-friendly products that support both environmental conservation and Indigenous communities in the Amazon.
At NYU, my involvement has only deepened. I serve as the Chair of the Sustainability Committee and a member of the Diversity Committee for the Student Government Assembly. Additionally, I am the Director of Research for the Alliance of Environmental and Social Justice, where I work on projects that intersect climate finance and social justice, creating resilient environments for marginalized communities. These roles have allowed me to integrate my passion for environmental activism with academic rigor, driving meaningful change both on and off-campus.
Balancing academic rigor with activism requires resilience and adaptability. But every step, every effort, has reinforced my belief in the power of positive action.
Looking ahead, my aspirations are clear. I aim to continue my work in environmental economics, focusing on creating sustainable solutions that benefit both people and the planet. I am driven by the vision of a world where economic development and environmental stewardship go hand in hand. Through education, advocacy, and innovative projects, I believe we can achieve this balance.
